Description

We asked 17 women to share what they look for in a sports bra, based on their workouts and preferences. Here are their picks.
Colleen

Cup size: 34FF

Needs: No bounce, extreme support, still looks good.

Workout type: bootcamp-style HIIT classes

Why it's great: Little to no bouncing for my giant cans, feels comfortable and secure, and it makes my boobs look legit awesome.
Rebecca

Cup size: 30DD

Needs: I want it to hold me close and, please, for the love of ice cream, no chafing!

Workout type: long-distance running

Why it's great: It has a clasp, which makes for easy post-run removal, and it's highly supportive for those of us with generous bosoms. Just make sure you get the right size! If it's too loose, it will chafe. This I promise you.
Victoria

Cup size: 36B

Needs: Supportive but not tight. Sometimes they're TOO supportive and I literally can't breathe.

Workout type: running and biking

Why it's great: These Target sports bras are an incredible bang for your buck, plus they're super comfortable and supportive. I usually go a size down from my normal size. I own so many of them and I keep buying them!
Melissa K.

Cup size: 34D

Needs: Comfort, stretch, and support.

Workout type: Pilates and HIIT

Why it's great: The fabric is so soft and comfortable. It's very breathable and wicks away moisture better than most sports bras I own. It's seamless, so the elastic stays put and it doesn't stretch out in the wash. Plus, it comes in so many fun colors.
Melodie

Cup size: 32E

Needs: Support, usually a racerback.

Workout type: running and ballet

Why it's great: Adjustable straps mean I can adjust the fit; [it] has actual hooks and eyes, again, so I can adjust the fit. I have big boobs, so there’s probably never going to be zero bounce — however, this bra tends to contain them well no black eyes yet!
Courtney

Cup size: 34B

Needs: I don't need that much support, so I prefer seamless sports bras.

Workout type: running, dance, and yoga

Why it's great: This has a surprising amount of support for a seamless bra, thanks to the extended band. The thin straps make it easy to pull off after a very sweaty workout. Around the cups, the fabric is subtly shaped, so it conforms to the shape of your chest without being aggressively push-up. I like that I can wear it running or to yoga.
Jacqueline

Cup size: 36D

Needs: Something that’s tight enough to support me but not too tight that it cuts me off.

Workout type: HIIT, yoga, Pilates, and boxing

Why it's great: It’s honestly just classic. Nothing fancy, and does its job
Addy

Cup size: 34A

Needs: Anything seamless. I want to feel like I have slipped a second skin on, and I get very annoyed if I can feel a certain part of the bra compressing more than other parts. For example, I really dislike bras that have a single large, tight band at the bottom. I also like sports bras that are very basic and don't have a zillion small straps weaving across your back like all of the new trendy bras do.

Workout type: yoga and cardio exercises like running, using the elliptical, and interval training

Why it's great: It is seriously as simple as it gets. I also like that it is microfiber because it does not irritate me like cotton does when I am running and sweating a lot.
Kate

Cup size: 30E

Needs: Keeping the girls from bouncing!!

Workout type: running, lifting, climbing, skiing, and hiking

Why it's great: Keeps everything contained, it’s ultra comfy, and it minimizes back bulges.
Nina

Cup size: 32D

Needs: Support without overbearing constraint.

Workout type: low- to medium-impact workouts

Why it's great: It is very soft and comfortable and keeps me held in without feeling like a binder pushing my boobs down into my chest. I feel like often sports bra makers think they need to make it as though we don't actually have boobs. or make them push up bras for the Insta models.
Meg

Cup size: 28-30 D-E (Finding an appropriate cup size in such small band size is rough.)

Needs: Solid or neutral colors, thick bands, and of course support.

Workout type: running and dumbbell/kettlebell exercises

Why it's great: All supportive, different color and pattern options.
Sarah

Cup size: 36DDD/E

Needs: I'm after the perfect combo of support, ventilation, and ease of putting on. So many sports bras for larger sizes are these bizarre contraptions with a million clasps and zippers. And those DO work, but I'm lazy and trying to remove all possible obstacles (excuses) to working out.

Workout type: yoga, boxing, walking, cleaning my apartment

Why it's great: It has adjustable clasps, thick/supportive material, and it's open in the back BUT you can still just put it on over your head!
Erin

Cup size: 34DD

Needs: Support with a capital S.

Workout type: running, strength-training, and spinning

Why it's great: Comfortable, limited chafing, holds my boobs down.
Kayla

Cup size: 34D

Needs: I like a sports bra that's soft and compact, but not TOO thick. I personally like my sports bras pretty tight (gotta keep the girls in somehow) but don't usually go for anything with built-in cups or extra coverage.

Workout type: high impact workouts like weigh-lifting or running

Why it's great: I love the fabric of Champion sports bras and have been wearing mine for years. I love it because it keeps my boobs from bouncing — no matter the workout — but also doesn't cut into my skin. Plus, I never have to adjust it mid-workout, which is a major bonus.
Kim

Cup size: 30B

Needs: No frills, low-impact support.

Workout type: boxing, yoga, and Pilates

Why it's great: I'm a woman of simple taste (and of small breasts), and this one is comfy enough to feel like I'm not wearing anything, but it's still as supportive as I need it to be.
Melissa C.

Cup size: 36D

Needs: Something supportive but not constricting.

Workout type: running, yoga, and indoor cycling

Why it's great: It holds the girls down, which makes it perfect for a run. I feel like it's multi-faceted, because I can wear it during yoga class, too.
L

Cup size: 36D

Needs: SUPPORT and NO BOUNCING, or the strap moving up and down my back. Literally, give me a uniboob as long as they stay in place, I don't care how it looks.

Workout type: kickboxing

Why it's great: I have kind of floppy boobs and need them to be strapped down/held in place during a high-intensity workout like kickboxing. The straps are adjustable (they're velcro, but I've never had a problem with it not sticking, even though I wash the bras every weekend); and there's a three-hook closure in the back, which keeps it in place on your back. I've had to sew the hooks/eyes in place a few times or replace them, but it's worth it to preserve the life of my older Fionas. I like that the bra comes in sizes (32A, 36D, etc.), and if you buy a wacky color, you can usually find it on sale somewhere because no one wants those colors. I will cry when I finally wash mine so many times that they die.
DZ

Cup size: 34A

Needs: To hold the boobs with exercise, hide the nips.

Workout type: Barre, indoor cycling, and other boutique fitness.

Why it's great: It's cheap and comes in lots of colors. I have small boobs, so it does the job. I also get cute bras from Marshall’s. I don’t wear Athleta because they’re too expensive, and Lululemon gives me boob side bulge.
